Pricing is one of the biggest levers a studio has, and one of the least revisited. Many owners copy a competitor's price list on day one and never touch it again. A little structure goes a long way.
Start from what a class costs you
Add up what it takes to run one class: a share of your rent, the instructor's pay, utilities and software. Divide that by the number of people who usually attend. If a class costs RM180 to run and averages 12 people, each spot costs you RM15. That is your floor. Every price on your list should sit comfortably above it.
Build a simple price ladder
Most studios do well with three or four options:
- Drop-in: the highest price per class. It is for visitors and the undecided.
- Class packs: 5, 10 or 20 classes, each a little cheaper per class than the last.
- Membership: a monthly plan with the best value per class for people who come often.
The ladder should make the next step up feel like an obvious win. If a 10-pack costs almost the same as a month of unlimited classes, most regulars will choose the membership, which is exactly what you want.
Use expiry dates wisely
Expiry dates keep members coming regularly. A 10-class pack that lasts three months nudges people to book every week. Make expiry too tight, though, and members feel punished. Give them a fair window and remind them before credits run out.
Make memberships the best deal
Memberships that renew automatically give you predictable income and keep members in a habit. Price them so that someone attending twice a week saves clearly compared with packs. Offer a freeze option for holidays or injuries, so pausing doesn't turn into cancelling.
Create an intro offer that leads somewhere
A first-timer offer, such as three classes for a low price, gets people through the door. The real goal is what happens next. Follow up before the offer ends with a reason to join, such as a discount on their first month if they sign up within a week.
Review your prices every year
Costs go up every year, and prices should follow. Review your list once a year, compare it with your cost per spot, and give members notice before any change. Loyal members on older prices can keep them for a while as a thank-you.
